Die Ausstellung zeigt eine Auswahl der Marken und Modelle, die das Statement Motorräder „Made in England“ weltberühmt gemacht haben. Und erfolgreich. BSA war zeitweise der größte Motorradhersteller der Welt. Norton wurde durch zahlreiche Erfolge zur Rennsportlegende. Oder Triumph zur Marke mit einer definitiv coolen Identität.
Made in England – in Person
Anhand einer Auswahl von 15 Personen, die in der englischen Motorradgeschichte relevant waren/sind, werden mit ihren Storys kleine Bereiche dieser gigantischen Geschichte betrachtet. Bewusst sind die Personen nicht allein aus England, sondern auch aus dem umfassenderen Bereich der britischen Inseln.
Racing – the driving force – die treibende Kraft
Der Motorradrennsport spielt auf den britischen Inseln eine besonders herausragende Rolle für die Motorradwelt. Die Tourist Trophy ist das ultimative Motorradrennen und hat seit über 100 Jahren einen Sonderstatus, wenn es um den definitiven Test von Mensch und Maschine geht. Nicht nur die Rennmaschinen, auch die Weiterentwicklungen der Serienmotorräder wurde dadurch entscheidend geprägt.
Merchandise Marks Act 1887 – Country of origin
In England wurde bereits 1887 die Produktkennzeichnung eingeführt, die das Herstellungsland ja fast schon zu einem Statement machte. Besonders auch Produkte „Made in Germany“ waren damals Hintergrund der Bemühungen, landeseigene Hersteller zu schützen. Zollkriege, motiviert durch ähnliche Hintergründe, sind heute noch immer Standard. Wo ein Produkt heute herkommt, erscheint häufig sehr diffus. Einige „Made in England“-Marken sind heute immer noch oder wieder aktiv – die Produktionsorte und Markenrechte sind nun eher international angesiedelt.

The exhibition shows a selection of the brands and models that have made the statement “Made in England” motorcycles world-famous. And successful. At times, BSA was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. Norton became a racing legend through numerous successes. And Triumph became a brand with a definitely cool identity.

Based on a selection of 15 people who were/are relevant in English motorcycle history, small areas of this gigantic history are examined with their stories. The people are deliberately not just from England, but also from the wider British Isles.
Racing – the driving force
Motorcycle racing plays a particularly prominent role in the motorcycling world in the British Isles. The Tourist Trophy is the ultimate motorcycle race and for over 100 years has held a special status when it comes to the definitive test of man and machine. Not only the racing machines, but also the further development of production motorcycles was decisively influenced by it.

Product labeling was introduced in England as early as 1887, making the country of manufacture almost a statement. Products “Made in Germany” in particular were the background to efforts to protect national manufacturers. Customs wars, motivated by similar backgrounds, are still standard today. Where a product comes from today often seems very vague. Some “Made in England” brands are still active today or are active again – the production locations and trademark rights are now more international.
